Elon Musk Ascends to Trillionaire Status as Investors Flood SpaceX IPO

Gravity isn’t the only thing Elon Musk defied on Friday morning.

As the opening bell rang simultaneously from the bright lights of Times Square and the dusty rocket fields of Starbase, Texas, the global financial landscape fractured into a pre- and post-SPCX era. The public debut of SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) did not merely break stock market records; it entirely reset the bar for corporate valuation and transformed its eccentric founder into the world's first official paper trillionaire.

Musk reflected on this absurd corporate trajectory during his opening remarks from Starbase, admitting that back when it was a little company that started in a warehouse in El Segundo, he never anticipated this day. "If people had told me this was going to happen, I was like, 'Man, you must be smoking some really good crack because I think this company's going to fail,'" Musk remarked with his signature bluntness. Instead, the company has vaulted into the public sphere with a clear mandate to finance Musk's ultimate goal "to make life multi-planetary." Addressing everyday spectators, Musk added, "Not just a few astronauts, I mean literally you. Whoever you are watching this, SpaceX wants to be able to take you to the moon, take you to Mars and ultimately beyond."

Investors practically tripped over themselves to buy into that cosmic vision. Institutional and retail buyers snapped up 555.6 million shares at the initial offering price of $135 apiece, generating a staggering $75 billion in proceeds. This massive cash haul effortlessly dethroned the previous record holder, Saudi Aramco (Tadawul: 2222), which raised $26 billion in its 2019 public debut. When the first trades cleared on the exchange, SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) popped 11% higher to open at $150 a share, instantly pushing the company's market cap past the dizzying $2 trillion milestone. For Musk, whose net worth hovered around $982.6 billion just before the opening bell according to Forbes, the market surge pushed his personal wealth into the twelve-zero territory at an estimated $1.1 trillion.

While Wall Street celebrated a historic payday, with lead underwriters Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) raking in an estimated combined $500 million in commissions, not every market professional is buying into the orbital euphoria. Skeptics point out that the company's valuation is anchored more to stellar ambition than traditional balance sheets, given that it burned through $8.7 billion in net losses between the beginning of 2025 and March 31, 2026.

Equity researchers at Morningstar (NADAQ: MORN) took a remarkably grounded view of the listing, warning clients that the IPO is "significantly overvalued." Analysts at the firm estimate the rocket manufacturer's true intrinsic value sits closer to $780 billion, less than half of its public opening valuation, citing unproven deep-space technology and relentless capital requirements. Yet, Musk's supporters are banking on his historical ability to turn ridiculous odds into staggering returns, point in hand being Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), which has delivered a 20,000% return for shareholders since its 2010 listing.

At the Times Square ceremony, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell rallied the company’s internal ranks while acknowledging the turbulent, multi-decade journey to the public market. "Today, we make history again, and we have a history of making history," Shotwell said to the crowd. "We're about 22,000 strong, and thanks go to all of you for hanging in there, for keeping a straight spine as the doubters doubt, to achieve historic things every day." Nasdaq Chief Executive Officer Adena Friedman welcomed the listing with similar enthusiasm, stating that the exchange is "incredibly proud to be SpaceX's partner as it builds the physical and digital infrastructure of the future."

The sheer size of the listing has forced Wall Street institutions to bend their own rules, with Nasdaq modifying its standard procedures to allow the newly public entity to gain entry into index-tied funds in just 15 trading days. This unprecedented speed has caused a wave of capital reallocation across the broader tech sector, as passive funds prepare to absorb the massive stock. The sudden entry has also created notable friction with large institutional asset managers, including pension funds from California and New York, who issued complaints regarding Musk's dominant super-voting shares and a lack of traditional shareholder oversight.

The landmark listing kicks off a highly anticipated wave of mega-cap technology debuts expected later this year, with highly valued artificial intelligence developers Anthropic and OpenAI scheduled to follow the rocket maker into the public markets.
