Amazon Inks 20-Year Deal with Constellation to Expand Clean Nuclear Capacity
Amazon and Constellation Energy sign a landmark 20-year power purchase agreement to add 190 megawatts of nuclear capacity at Calvert Cliffs, driving $3 billion in Maryland clean energy infrastructure.

Data centers consume electricity at a relentless pace, and cloud giants have realized that meeting their ambitious carbon-neutral goals requires round-the-clock power that weather patterns cannot disrupt. Enter nuclear energy. Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Constellation Energy (Nasdaq: CEG) have finalized a major 20-year power purchase agreement centered around Maryland’s landmark Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, delivering a significant boost of zero-emission electricity to the mid-Atlantic grid.
Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon is committing to purchase 690 megawatts of power from the Lusby, Maryland facility. Crucially, the long-term contract directly underwrites state-of-the-art equipment upgrades across the plant’s entire 1,790-megawatt footprint. These efficiency uprates will add approximately 190 megawatts of brand-new, carbon-free generating capacity scheduled to come online between 2030 and 2032.
This corporate commitment unlocks more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment across Maryland. The guaranteed revenue stream provided by Amazon provides Constellation Energy with the financial foundation required to relicense Calvert Cliffs for an additional 20 years, while paving the way for potential future clean energy technologies at the site. A companion retail supply agreement will support Amazon's operations throughout the 13-state PJM regional market.
Unlike off-grid power arrangements that divert electricity directly into private data center compounds, every megawatt generated by Calvert Cliffs will continue flowing directly into the PJM regional transmission system. This setup demonstrates how major corporate buyers can sponsor new base-load generation while reinforcing the stability of the public electric grid.
Joe Dominguez, chairman, president, and CEO of Constellation Energy Corporation (Nasdaq: CEG), highlighted that private capital is playing a crucial role in strengthening critical infrastructure, stating that the agreement secures the long-term operation of the plant while creating a foundation for future investments in advanced nuclear tech. Kerry Person, vice president of AWS Global Operations and Data Center Delivery at Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), noted that the deal sustains Maryland's primary carbon-free energy source, supports hundreds of local jobs, and brings critical new generation capacity to the regional power network.
Located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Calvert Cliffs is the powerhouse of Maryland’s clean energy ecosystem, generating roughly 80% of the state’s carbon-free power, enough to supply the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes. Beyond its generation output, the facility employs more than 800 workers and contributes approximately $21 million annually in local taxes to support area schools, roads, and public services.
