Did China Just Permanently Break the Global Silver Market?

Did China Just Permanently Break the Global Silver Market?

If you thought the wild financial swings of the past few years were exclusively reserved for volatile tech stocks and emerging cryptocurrencies, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to precious metals in 2026. Over the first two months of the year, the global commodity sector watched with a mix of awe and sheer panic as China aggressively absorbed nearly 800 tonnes of silver. The resulting whiplash has fundamentally fractured what was once a smoothly integrated global market.

Customs data paints a staggering picture of this unprecedented demand. Throughout January and February, China imported over 790 tonnes of silver, hitting an eight-year high. February alone accounted for a year-over-year record of 470 tonnes. This massive influx was driven by a voracious appetite from both the industrial and investment sectors, which effectively drained domestic stockpiles and pushed local price premiums to dizzying heights. It was the perfect storm of depleted exchange reserves and desperate overseas metals purchasing.

The consequences of this hoarding triggered the most volatile start to a year the silver market has ever recorded. Spot silver went on a spectacular, face-ripping rally, touching a nominal all-time high of $121.62 per ounce on January 29, 2026. But gravity always collects its debts. Just over a week later, by February 6, the metal lost nearly half its value, plummeting back down to $64 per ounce and leaving late-to-the-party speculators nursing historic losses.

However, the real story here is not a sudden disappearance of silver from the earth’s crust, but rather a man-made bureaucratic bottleneck. Analysts Lina Thomas and Daan Struyven at The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) had actually warned the market about this exact scenario in January. According to the investment bank, the intense price turbulence is completely localized. China’s new 2026 export restrictions, which now mandate strict official approval for any outbound silver shipments, have essentially trapped the metal inside the country.

To fully grasp how a regional regulatory shift can trigger a global pricing crisis, it helps to visualize the standard flow of precious metals.

By choking off liquidity and trapping inventory, China's export controls are forcing a dangerous fragmentation of the global silver trade. The Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) analysts pointed out that thinner global inventories create the exact conditions necessary for massive squeezes. When investor flows quickly absorb whatever metal is left in London vaults, rallies accelerate, only to reverse violently when that regional tightness eventually eases.

We are currently witnessing a profound structural shift in commodities trading. Disruption risks are prompting major market participants to aggressively secure their own stockpiles rather than relying on shared global buffers. This hoarding mentality transforms a highly efficient, pooled global system into a fragmented web of isolated regional inventories. Ultimately, it leaves the international silver market highly vulnerable to the kind of sharp, localized price swings that have defined the chaotic first quarter of 2026.
