United Health is planning to add a further 10,000 doctors to its platform

Atrius Health was already struggling with its finances in 2020, and the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic made matters worse. In 2020, this Boston-based nonprofit reported a small loss despite its reputation for providing efficient health services. However, it was always careful to plan well in order to be prepared for uncertain times. For example, it foresaw the damage Covid-19 could cause, so it began looking for new lines of credit and saving cash. Things didn't look good before Covid, considering the number of independent doctors has dropped significantly. Binding to large health systems became the order of the day, due to the weak bargaining position and astronomical administrative costs. The Covid-19 outbreak made the situation worse! The service provider had to spend a lot of money buying the protective equipment. Reports also showed a significant decrease in inpatient visits, and all of these factors hurt revenue. Large hospitals have always shown their eagerness and openness to buying up medical practices that are struggling with capital. The OptumHealth unit has announced the acquisition of Atrius, which is understandable when you consider how much the service provider has struggled with its finances. UnitedHealthcare has announced details of its plans to take on additional doctors. The health conglomerate says it may add about 10,000 doctors. It hopes regulators will keep the latest deal with Atria in motion, which will make Atrius' 700 doctors part of the 10,000 to be absorbed this year. Atrius announced its decision on Tuesday but declined to reveal the terms of the deal. Journalists reached out to UnitedHealth for comments, but their efforts were in vain as the company declined to comment. The Massachusetts Attorney General spokeswoman says regulators have received the notice of the transaction and will review it soon. OptumHealth's chief executive officer, Wyatt Decker, spoke ahead of the announcement of the Atrius deal. He outlined that Optum has plans to organically expand its existing practices. He also added that he was able and willing to support doctors who want to be independent.
