Gold's Dramatic Pullback: Why Wall Street Insiders Are Calling It a Market Reset

If you bought into the precious metals rally earlier this year expecting a smooth, uninterrupted ride to the upper atmosphere, the subsequent plunge from January’s peak down to the current $4,320 range has likely triggered a severe case of financial whiplash.

Gold, which usually follows a predictable script as a defensive haven during geopolitical flashpoints like the US-Iran conflict, completely drifted off-course, lagging behind a white-hot equity market and a muscular greenback.

Yet, if you ask the primary strategists guiding institutional capital on Wall Street, this isn't a funeral for the yellow metal, it's a necessary macro flush that is setting the stage for a dramatic second act.

Lefteris Farmakis and Themistoklis Fiotakis, cross-asset research strategists at Barclays (NYSE: BCS), explicitly characterize this multi-month downturn as a textbook market reset rather than a structural breakdown. The mathematics behind the decline are largely mechanical, driven by the twin forces of a strengthening US Dollar Index and a blistering 10% surge in the S&P 500, which mathematically implied an approximate 10% drop in gold prices. The remainder of the decline was simply the violent unwinding of over-leveraged, crowded long positions as momentum-driven hedge funds rushed for the exits. Because the underlying structural drivers remain completely intact and gold is bumping against its modeled fundamental fair value floor of $4,150, the British banking giant has refused to budge on its long-term projections, holding fast to its 2026 price target of $4,791 per ounce and a 2027 target of $4,900 per ounce.

Taking an even more aggressive stance on the recovery is Greg Shearer, Head of Base and Precious Metals Research at JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM). Shearer openly acknowledges that gold has been stuck in a technical no-man's land, trudging tightly above its 200-day moving average of $4,340 and finding itself capped by its 50-day moving average near $4,730. While this sideways plod has temporarily pushed gold to the back burner for casual retail investors, Shearer argues that looking purely at headline data misspecifies global demand. Alternative over-the-counter market data and massive Swiss refinery flows reveal that under-the-radar institutional accumulation actually rose to 244 tonnes in the first quarter, heavily anchored by China. Backed by this resilient sovereign demand, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) projects gold will aggressively carve out fresh record highs, averaging a staggering $6,000 per ounce by the final quarter of 2026 before expanding toward $6,300 in 2027.

This structural optimism is echoed across wealth management circles, albeit with a focus on tactical patience. Keith Lerner, Chief Investment Officer and Chief Market Strategist at Truist Financial Corporation (NYSE: TFC), views the current price action as an essential consolidation phase. Rather than panic over short-term mark-to-market volatility, Lerner advises utilizing gold as a core portfolio diversifier while waiting for technical indicators to clear, noting that a break back above the 50-day moving average will signal that the broader cyclical uptrend has officially resumed. Concurrently, David McAlvany, CEO of McAlvany Financial Group, views the recent correction from the highs as a healthy cleansing of speculative froth. From his perspective, the purging of over-leveraged momentum traders creates a cleaner, more sustainable runway, ensuring that as skepticism eventually begins to mount around peak equity valuations, defensive capital will inevitably rotate back toward physical assets for wealth preservation.

Naturally, a consensus this broad is bound to draw out a few contrarians. Michael Antonelli, Market Strategist for Baird, offers a starkly different outlook, predicting that gold will ultimately finish below $4,500 per ounce by the close of 2026. Antonelli’s thesis hinges on shifting macro anxieties, arguing that structural worries regarding U.S. debt levels and currency debasement are steadily fading from the immediate spotlight as the market pivots its attention toward upcoming midterm elections, effectively draining gold of its premium.

Yet, the short-term tactical tailwinds appear to be shifting right back toward the bulls. The commodities team at Citi (NYSE: C) sharply revised its three-month gold target upward to $4,500 per ounce, a decisive leap from its previous $4,000 estimate, while keeping its longer-term 6-to-12-month target locked at $5,000. The primary catalyst for this sudden institutional pivot is a major macroeconomic shift following an imminent US-Iran memorandum of understanding that is expected to normalize regional trade flows. While a cooling energy sector typically lowers inflation headlines, Citi (NYSE: C) and UBS Group (NYSE: UBS) both note that a resulting less-aggressive Federal Reserve will clear the way for lower real yields. Because real interest rates are the ultimate gravity mechanism for non-yielding assets, an easing of Fed hawkishness effectively removes the heaviest roadblock in gold’s path, turning this steep correction into what looks like a premier institutional entry point.
