Fiat heirs Agnelli invest billions in Philips

The well-known Fiat Agnelli family is taking a significant step in the investment sector by making a billion-euro investment in Philips, one of the leading technology and healthcare companies. For a hefty sum of nearly three billion euros, the Agnelli holding company, known as Exor, secures a sizable stake in Philips. This strategic decision, however, comes as intra-family disputes over the Fiat patriarch's legacy are being played out.

In the deal, Exor, the Agnelli family's investment company, is taking a 15 percent stake in Philips, a long-established company. The deal, valued at around 2.6 billion euros, highlights confidence in Philips' transformation into an innovative healthcare company. Philips CEO Feike Sijbesma highlighted that this significant investment underscores the company's transformation and growth potential in the healthcare technology industry.

Philips has a clear vision to invest more in Personal Health and Health Systems. This vision is supported by considerable progress: In the second quarter of the current year, Personal Health posted three percent growth, while Group sales rose nine percent to 4.5 billion euros. In addition, the shares have climbed an impressive 35 percent since the beginning of the year.

Exor intends to be an active long-term investor in Philips. The Agnelli family is pursuing a clear strategy of increasing its involvement in the healthcare sector. Philips' focus on healthcare and technology fits well with Exor's objectives. Moreover, the holding company intends to increase its stake to a maximum of 20 percent. Along with this, Exor will have a seat on the supervisory board to take a more active role in the company's development.

The Agnelli family is by no means only active in the automotive sector. The investment company Exor holds stakes in various renowned companies, including Stellantis, Ferrari and Iveco. But the family is also invested in the sports and media sectors, for example in the Juventus Turin soccer club and the British business magazine "The Economist". The holding company is headed by a great-great-grandson of Fiat's founder, who also serves on the supervisory board of the Fiat automotive group and as head of Exor.

Despite these positive developments and strategic investments, the Agnelli family is also currently burdened by a bitter inheritance dispute. The conflict between Margherita Agnelli, Gianni Agnelli's only living daughter, and her children from her first marriage has been drawing court cases in Turin and Switzerland for years. This dispute could also have an impact on the family's investment activities in the future. The Agnelli family controls around 53 percent of the holding company's assets through Exor.
