AtkinsRéalis and Nvidia Team Up to Build Nuclear-Powered AI Data Centers

The artificial intelligence boom has a voracious appetite, and it turns out, feeding the beast is going to require splitting the atom.

Canadian engineering heavyweight AtkinsRéalis (TSX: ATRL) is officially teaming up with multinational tech titan Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) to figure out how to perfectly fuse the massive, relentless power requirements of generative AI with the carbon-free reliability of nuclear energy. The ultimate objective of this partnership is the development and seamless deployment of colossal, nuclear-powered AI factories.

Before a single shovel hits the dirt, the two companies are taking their ambitious designs to the virtual realm. By leveraging Nvidia’s Omniverse libraries, accelerated compute capabilities, and OpenUSD framework, AtkinsRéalis gains a highly sophisticated playground to design and optimize these integrated infrastructure systems. This allows the engineering firm to build highly accurate 3D digital twins to thoroughly stress-test facility layouts and power integrations in a simulated environment before committing to physical construction.

As the Original Equipment Manufacturer and exclusive license holder of CANDU technology , AtkinsRéalis brings a formidable 70-year legacy of nuclear excellence to the drafting table. The firm accurately noted that nuclear power is rapidly emerging as the premier low-carbon baseload for AI operations. Unlike intermittent renewable sources, nuclear generation can provide the constant, unwavering gigawatts required to keep dedicated AI computing workloads humming around the clock.

This collaboration goes far beyond simply plugging an advanced server rack into a local power plant. AtkinsRéalis is meticulously examining how its standardized nuclear power solutions within the CANDU portfolio can seamlessly integrate with the staggering requirements of large-scale AI data centers. To support this, Nvidia is contributing strategic leadership in computing and networking, alongside a heavy-hitting software arsenal. The tech company's Agentic AI, large language models, and high-fidelity simulation tools are slated to streamline complex engineering workflows, accelerate construction schedules, and crucially, assist in navigating the notoriously rigorous licensing pathways for nuclear energy.

Simultaneously, AtkinsRéalis will fold in its deep-rooted expertise in modular engineering, highly sophisticated cooling systems, power distribution, and resilience to physically support the deployment of Nvidia DSX-based AI infrastructure.

Leadership on both sides of the aisle recognizes the sheer scale of the opportunity at hand. AtkinsRéalis President and CEO Ian Edwards stated that the collaboration allows the firm to leverage its deep engineering roots across complex infrastructure to complement Nvidia's accelerated computing dominance, ultimately helping to power critical AI data centers.

Over at Nvidia, Vice President of AI Infrastructure Vladimir Troy neatly summarized the stakes of modern computing, noting that energy is essential to the AI industrial revolution. Troy added that pairing AtkinsRéalis's deep engineering and nuclear expertise with the Nvidia DSX Blueprint is the key to scaling the deployment of these highly efficient, next-generation AI factories.
